Our job is epic... and sometimes I forget!

I had a call yesterday with some fitness industry legends that I am on a webinar with at the end of March. We were talking about how to best prep a session that would help instructors see how to pivot in their careers and open doors to different roles within the fitness industry. As I was writing down some notes, I couldn’t stop writing and all of a sudden I’d basically written an essay to myself on how much I love this industry.

I LOVE all the cool stuff that I have ended up doing within fitness; working for Clubbercise, running amf.world, corporate sessions, nutrition seminars at gyms for their lifestyle transformation programs… I love the range of stuff that is available to us once we find out where we kind of step into our own but I also love how much it has brought my heart back to where I started.

Yes it is true, I don’t teach anywhere as much as I used to, not regularly anyway which I realise affords me a bit of time and energy for reflection (I remember what 23 hours a week feels like believe me)… but honestly this job is great. You see, I bloody love it. I love teaching, I love being with them all, I love the class content, I love the fact that I still teach Zumba after almost 16 years and I love it just as much as when I started, I love watching them all prance about, I love seeing them get stronger and lift heavier weights. It fills my soul with joy. Everything else I’ve ended up doing is somehow a spider's web moving out from classes… online, corporate stuff, big groups of folk for courses or seminars or webinars… it’s all like tentacles coming out from the root of everything great… and for me that root is teaching my community classes.

Without them I’d have no PT, Claire would never have come to my Clubbercise class and asked me to work for her, I’d not have made my Flex program nor my amf.world site and I certainly wouldn’t be teaching 9 hours on a corporate wellness week next week, nor chatting to Teresa, Sue and Olivia on a webinar at the end of March. That first decision to teach a Zumba class and falling in love with it so hard is what changed everything completely.... and earned Zumba decent sum in all the programs I trained in lol.

I know sometimes this job can feel a bit knackering… and we can get overwhelmed with the sheer quantity of hats we have to wear at any given moment. But it is bloody epic. There’s not very many other jobs that you can simultaneously work completely solo but also be kind of employed for a few hours if you fancy it. There’s not many jobs with this much flexibility nor the random routes of progression we can find. There’s not many jobs where you get to take a front row seat to watch other people kick some serious ass. It’s a magnificent career when you think about it.

So, if you, like I do sometimes, feel a bit overwhelmed and meh about a job that you know you love deep down, get yourself a blank sheet of paper and write down all the reasons why you LOVE what you do… and if you want to join us to hear what we have to say about using your skills to pivot into other areas of the fitness space, click here and register.
