The rise of mobility & resistance classes and how to add them in

Our clients and potential clients have never been more aware of their health and fitness. They watch social media videos, they follow people with excellent family friendly recipes, they watch people train, they listen to podcasts about the menopause or about getting into fitness. They have access to almost anything at the touch of a button. This means they are more open to trying some of the things that they are hearing about or watching. Enter resistance classes.

These sessions have always been popular, but now people are actively seeking them out. They’ve been told by their favourite Facebook personality that they need to stay strong as they age and they are open to doing that.

What we need to do is listen to what they want from us - maybe we are coaching complete beginners… then we need to tailor the classes to that, maybe we are coaching people who want to enter a Hyrox, maybe we are targeting people who would never in a million years set foot in a gym. Whatever the goals of our clients, we can make a class or a class system to help them achieve those goals. There is absolutely no reason why we cannot help our clients feel in incredible fitness shape and to encourage them to see what they are truly capable of.

My guys are a mixture of complete beginners and folk who have been coming to my classes for over a decade…. That means I need to cater for quite a broad range of people… and I don’t actually want to teach every night (after close to 20 years of dancing/teaching every night I’m enjoying a slightly slower pace to life lol). So this is how I’m doing it…. I have 5 or 6 completely ‘different’ class formats… these are spread out over the month. They start with a core & stretch class and get progressively more ‘complex’ in terms of equipment over the month finishing with a total body weighted workout at the end of the month. This means that every month folk who are brand new can start ‘at the beginning’. Combine this with my online Flex program which has both bodyweight and weighted/gym options everyone can go as deep as they want to into the world of weights.

I don’t cater for bodybuilders or Hyrox athletes, mine are all interested in feeling stronger and more healthy but probably aren’t looking for extreme results of any kind.

So, first and foremost really think about what your client base want and where they are at the moment and create classes that can help you move them toward their goals… and classes that can keep their interest.

If you want to check out my workouts (2 of each of the 5 basic class styles I’ve been teaching) join the Full version of our Fitness Library (monthly/annual) which you can cancel at any time (and your access remains until the end of the billing period), plus we have a 2 day free trial on, so you can look around before you commit. Simply register, upload your L2 and give me a few hours to give you access (because I’ll probably be coaching a deadlift somewhere when you sign up). Getting you feeling confident with resistance training is where it’s at for me, it’s the single best retention tool I’ve ever had (apart from the community vibes obv!)
