Corporate Wellness Sessions: A simple group exercise side hustle

I have a pretty hectic schedule anyway, between classes, personal training, this website and my other one, I’m pretty much rammed so I’m not really after any more regular extra work BUT I do love an ad hoc corporate wellness week. Getting booked to do a session here and there or one day every now and again is a dream for me. Not only does it generate extra income but it also gives my brain a bit of extra sparkle…having to think outside the box and create sessions that potentially might not be my normal week-to-week.

Occasionally people reach out via Google without knowing me, but that’s very rare. Instead most of the referrals come from my classes. I sent an email out a couple of years ago to my mailing list, letting them know I was available for ad hoc corporate wellness weeks and off the back of that one email I ended up with 3 clients who have a week either once or twice a year. It works great, a little boost for my brain and my bank balance every now again brings the fitness joy.

On these days I deliver pretty much anything. For one company I do regular nutrition seminars. They have an in-house gym and their PTs run a lifestyle transformation program, none of them want to do the in-depth start up seminar so I do it. That’s around 5-6 seminars a year. Another place I go in and do one whole day, this year I did low-impact dance fitness, bodyweight resistance training, 2x nutrition seminars and a Clubbercise sesh. That’s once a year. Another company I do whatever they want - 2 sessions twice a year. I was there last week, I did bootcamp and Zumba. Basically, whatever you feel comfortable teaching you could offer… and with the exception of the nutrition which you’d obv want a L4 or above for, all of these are L2 Group Ex sessions.

And let’s be honest, I don’t teach bootcamp very often if at all these days. I used to teach 3

sessions a week at 6am (absolutely revolting time to teach btw, if you’re doing it you’re a better person than me) but I’ve not done it for ages because it used to make me cry. Like actually. I’d cry on the way there because I was so tired. Dramatic. But to put together a one off 45 minute bootcamp sesh with no equipment was pretty fun. I used the Bootcamp manual I wrote for amf.world a while ago and some of the drills from my resistance finishers and they had the time of their lives. I kept it interactive and we did a lot of group work because they are all pretty close colleagues. It’s not my area of expertise these days BUT I can teach a one-off session with a bit of planning.

And that’s what I want to get across. Yes these days I only teach dance fitness and resistance training BUT because of the stuff I’ve taught before, or the Fitness Library, I can put together enough to do a one-off. It means I’m able to offer a lot more variety when it comes to putting together ideas for a local business.

I usually stick to local companies due to the travel but I’ll happily travel if they are paying for it. You could go to the company, you could stream (I did that once for a medical convention - 500 doctors and pharma reps doing Zumba online in their living rooms, it was very fun!) Keep it easy, keep it simple - most people are just absolutely buzzing not to be stuck to their desk for the day - we’re not training anyone for a Hyrox, we’re just getting them moving.

I’ll stop talking now, but honestly, it’s fun, it’s mostly easy to prep the sessions and once you’ve done one you can use the same plan or structure for somewhere else. So maybe think about emailing out to your current clients, it’s not an instance booking scenario BUT if they’ve got you in the back of their mind for their next team meeting most folk will be pretty excited to have something different at their place of work, to bring them together and give them some fitness joy to their working week.

If you need help planning this stuff, you know where we are - the Fitness Library has tons of stuff in.
